For such a quaint fishing town, it is remarkable how renowned for surfing Peniche has become. Peniche surf camps are unique in that many of them lie on what was once an island. This island joined the mainland from the accumulation of silt along the narrow channel that separated the two. Here in this unique spot lies some of the greatest wave variety in Europe!
Such variety ensures that surfing can take place year round, since the North (including Ericeira) is exposed to Atlantic Ocean swells whilst the South is sheltered. Climate here is unlike elsewhere in Portugal since it lies between the dry, warm South and the cool, wet North. This leads to long summers and mild winters. Surf spots here are world class, in particular Supertubos – a wave that dedicated surfers travel oceans to see!

The Surf Embassy Hostel
This property embodies a theme of surfing, due it’s location in one of Portugal’s surf hotspots. Those comfortable with surfing can hop on the hostel’s vintage 1968 shuttle bus down to the coast, whilst beginners can join in on surfing lessons from local, experienced instructors. Alternatively, free bikes and skates are available for guests to use when making the journey to the beach, which is just a 12 minute walk away.
The hotel also offers experiences like Stand Up Paddle Boarding, scuba diving and trips to the Berlengas Islands Natural Reserve. Although guests are free to cook for themselves in the shared kitchen, staff will recommend the local cuisine of fresh seafood available at nearby restaurants within a 5 minute walk of the hostel.
This hostel is better suited to group and solo travellers than couples, since rooms are in dormitory style accommodation only. Four and eight bed dorms are available for booking, with an array of bunk bed and single beds. Free wifi is available throughout the property, and an individual bathroom adjoins each room.
Pineapple Surf House
Another one of our recommended Peniche Surf Camps that differs from normal hotels by emphasising the huge surfing culture in the town. Guests here are lucky enough to stay in a hostel with beachy, surf decor and be just 8 minutes walk from the beach. Peniche Fortress, a historic beachfront property, is just 2.9km from the house, and looms over several surf spots, contributing to the breathtaking scenery.
The area is popular for cycling and hiking, which can be sorted from reception should guests fancy a well-earned break from the surf. Beyond this, the hostel houses a bar, table-tennis, a garden, a terrace and a shared lounge in which to unwind and meet fellow surfers.
The lowest price a night is for a bed in a ten bed mixed dorm. A quadruple (shared bathroom) or double room (private room) can also be booked. Each is equipped with a fridge, coffee machine and kettle. Certain rooms offer a kitchen containing an oven, microwave and toaster.
Baleal Surf Camp – Hostel 1
Guests at Baleal Surf Camp will have a true hostel experience. BBQ facilities are available, so guests can meet, enjoy food and bond over a love of surfing and travel! Alternatively, a garden, a terrace and a shared lounge provide a space to soak up the sun and take in the panoramic Portuguese scenery.
Guests at the accommodation are free to enjoy activities in and around Peniche, like cycling and hiking. Staff are only too pleased to help you sort this and answer any questions you have about the area, through providing advice and recommendations. Yoga classes and massages are further things for guests to enjoy, aiding relaxation and unwinding to complement this adventure holiday.
One of the Peniche Surf Camps better suited to group and solo travellers. Guests can choose either a single or bunk bed within the rooms. These rooms can be single sex or mixed dormitory rooms. A triple room is the smallest room available. All of these rooms have shared bathrooms, seating area and a patio. They also come with a coffee machine, but selected rooms have a kitchen and dishwasher.
Peniche Kite & Surf Camp
This is one of few Peniche Surf Camps to offer surfboard rental, perfect for intermediate to advanced surfers who don’t wish to invest in lessons. However, these are still offered on the nearby beach – which is just two minutes walk from the property. Beyond surfing and kite-surfing, other water sport facilities are offered on site.
Views from this property are the envy of other Peniche Surf Camps, with this one being the closest to Peniche Fortress. The Atlantic Ocean is on one side, with stunning Algarve scenery behind. Guests can enjoy this from private terraces or balconies, or instead take it all in with fellow surfers in communal areas on the ground floor.
Twin rooms are available as standard or deluxe rooms, and most have a sea view. Alternatively a deluxe room can be booked (pictured above), which sleeps three on a double and single bed. Lower cost rooms are also available in the form of mixed dorms. Some of these units have a seating area, terrace or balcony. There is also free WiFi throughout the property.
Ferrel Surf House
Ferrel Surf House is another property offering surfing lessons to beginners, which take place on nearby beaches – a respective ten and twelve minutes walk away. This is not the only activity which can be booked, snorkelling and bike hire can also be fixed from reception. Guests can thereby see the stunning landscapes of Ferrel, Peniche Fortress and the Algarve.
This property is one of few to offer a pool, and a terrace to sunbathe upon. For this reason, the property is noted as being excellent value according to Booking.com – guests get a lot for their money here. For example, snorkelling and cycling excursions are further activities offered here that not all Peniche Surf Camps can.
Both deluxe and standard double and twin rooms are available with private bathrooms. Alternatively a single bed in a mixed or female-only dorm can be booked. Each room comes with a flat-screen TV and views of the sea, pool or garden are featured in different rooms. Free WiFi is featured also.
