Surfers at Popoyo Surf Camps have access to world class breaks with year round swell from it’s consistent offshore winds from Lake Nicaragua. 300 days out of the year are suitable for surfing, so no excuses!
The Popoyo Surf Zone is a unique combination of points, beach and reef breaks. These harness the power of Nicaragua’s characteristically southern swells and create exceptional surf. Popoyo in truth put Nicaragua on the surf map.
Popoyo is best known for its epic reef break which breaks in an A-frame and allows for amazing lefts and rights to be ridden and it can handle double overhead meaning that one bigger days it can crowded. For beginners there is a more mellow beach break close to Magnific rock.
If you’re look to up the ante then the Outer Reef is where its at. Swells come in over shallow rocks and currents sculpt heavy, powerful barrels with faces up to 20ft at high tide. The outer reef at Popoyo only works in big swell and is only the preserve of big wave surfers.

Soma Surf Resort
This resort is just a 5 minute drive from Popoyo’s main surfing beach, so not only are surfers centrally located, they are also treated like five-star guests! Guests are spoilt for choice, with restaurants in Popoyo and Las Salinas being five minutes by car, or the on-site restaurant caters for all cultures, serving up international cuisine day-to-day.
Soak up the sun on Soma’s sun deck, take a dip in the pool, or just kick back and relax in the extensive garden. If you have more of a taste for adventure that surfing can’t fill, the resorts tour desk will assist you in booking activities like zip lining at Lombacho volcano – just 1.5 hours drive away.
Accommodation here is most suitable for groups, although it can still be booked by pairs or solo travellers. There is a bungalow that sleeps 4 on double and single beds, or a triple room equipped with three single beds. The air-conditioned rooms and bungalows offer ceiling fans, wooden décor and a private bathroom including shower and free toiletries.

Many visitors to Nicaragua hire cars, and unlike most Popoyo Surf Camps this one offers free parking. Complimentary wifi is also available. Guests can engage in further activities after a day on the surf, for example horse riding or fishing. The hotel also offers bike hire.

Popoyo Surfcamp – SHAKA
This is property is renowned for it’s cosy, social, laid-back vibes. If you like the sound of lounging in the garden at an outdoor cinema next to a campfire, then Shaka surf camp is for you! Reviewers rave about the personal touches and friendly staff (who are rarely seen without a smile on their face!).

This hostel is most suitable for individuals, or those travelling in a group. Accommodation is made up of a series of dormitories containing a bunch of single beds. Although this makes it social you can check out our other Popoyo Surf Camps for more couple friendly accommodation.
Club Surf Popoyo
Solo travellers paradise – individuals who visit Club Surf prefer it to other Popoyo Surf Camps if travelling alone, rating it 9.5/10! Staff go above-and-beyond to ensure each guest’s stay is unforgettable. For example, room service is offered and the front desk is even 24 hours.
The property has a shared lounge, a garden and a sun terrace where guests can meet, connect socialise. Alternatively, visitor can commune at an in-house restaurant which not only is known for it’s sea food, but caters for vegan, vegetarian and dairy-free diets.
Rooms come in doubles or triples, with the furniture arrangement that will suit you best of doubles, singles and bunk beds. Each room is fitted with a patio with a garden view, although some boast a sea view. All guest rooms at the accommodation feature air conditioning and a wardrobe, and a private bathroom.
Wild Waves Surf-House
This property is the closest to the beach of all our Popoyo Surf Camps, being just a minutes walk away. The stretch of beach beyond is a private area reserved for guests, allowing them to swim, surf and sunbathe at their own leisure away from crowds. On site, there is a sun terrace and garden for guests to immerse themselves in the tropical panoramic surroundings.
Anything a guest could want in a trip abroad is provided by this property. Whether that be water sports facilities (on site), bikes to explore the area or fishing equipment. Even if you want a break from such exerting activities, an open-air bath and yoga classes can be booked.
Rooms sleep two people here, and can be booked as doubles, luxury doubles or twin rooms. Every room opens to a patio with garden views, and are fitted with a kitchenette. This contains an oven, a toaster, a fridge and coffee machine.
